PBS drops Tales sequel
San Francisco-The Public Broadcasting System has scrapped plans to finance a sequel to Tales of the City, the popular miniseries that drew protests from the radical right.
PBS executives say they decided against backing More Tales of the City because they can't afford it. Not so, says the man who wrote the book series on which the show was based.
Author Armistead Maupin says PBS was enthusiastic about More Tales until religious conservatives blasted the original series for its partial nudity and positive portrayal of gays in San Francisco in the 1970s.
Tales of the City, which tells the story of an enigmatic landlady and her web of acquaintances, won critical acclaim when it aired on public television stations as part of American Playhouse in January. It was PBS'
highest-rated dramatic miniseries in more than a decade.
But the show also generated controversy. Some PBS stations decided against running the program; others used a version in which naked breasts were covered by pixelated pasties.
But PBS spokeswoman Karen Doyle said the decision not to fund More Tales had nothing to do with the criticism.
"Provocative programming is nothing new to PBS," Doyle said. “Doing a popular program doesn't mean we're going to do it again and again."
Britain's Channel 4, which financed nearly all of the original series, now is looking for a new American partner, possibly HBO or another cable network, for More Tales, which is planned as a six-hour, $8 million production.
Hawaii marriage bill passes
Continued from Page 1
While some may argue there is no discrimination because members of both genders are equally forbidden from marrying anyone of the same gender, "similar arguments failed to save the laws against interracial marriage, in which everyone was equally forbidden to marry anyone of a different race," Matsunaga said. "Parallel discriminations are still discriminations."
Sen. Rick Reed, however, said it was absurd to grant special rights based on sexual behavior.
"It is offensive to equate same-sex attraction with ethnicity and comparable to the civil rights movement on behalf of blacks in
America," Reed said.
Sen. Rosalyn Baker, who was one of two key votes in bringing the bill out of the Judiciary Committee, said she supported the bill because it sets in motion consideration of benefits that might be given to same-sex couples entering into domestic partnerships.
After listening to Matsunaga, Iwase and Sen. Bert Kobayashi debate the separation of powers issue and cite historical references on the issue, Sen. Stan Koki quipped: "I think too much education sometimes makes people insane."
Others opposing the bill besides Matsunaga were Sens. Bert Kobayashi, Andy Levin and Brian Kanno.
